You have your work from home website completed and ready to send visitors and now you want to get listed and ranked on Google but you are not sure what to do. Here are some steps to take and not take.
Important point: Resubmission would not help you speed up your ranking if the site is already listed by Google. When you search ‘Google submit’ you can find the page where sites are submitted. It is understandable that their page would rank on top of the list but you could attempt several other ways for them to decide on your site.
You work from home site could get noticed easily by Google through links with other successful sites. Using online directories could be the best and fastest way though. Google would routinely check the top ranking directories and when you use links from such sites, your site gets indexed faster.
You have a choice between free directories and paid subscriptions and it is entirely up to your budget and preference. The best type to choose are the business directories which deal with your line of business since Google looks for commonality while indexing your site. The business directory ought to have a lot of commonality with your line of business and your site.
The sure shot way to get top rankings with Google is to get listed with DMOZ, sometimes called an Open Directory. This is however not the fastest ways to get your work from home site noticed by Google. DMOZ might take weeks or months to enlist you. This is due to the fact that every submitted site is overseen by a category editor with personal supervision, and you never know how far you are in the queue. One advice in this regard is that if you are thinking of submitting to DMOZ, study and follow their guidelines carefully before submission.
You could also submit articles to the relevant sites and get indexed by Google. All of the article sites (the good ones at least) allow you to include a section called “About the Author” or “Author Resource”. This is the place which is meant to carry the critical link to your site.
If the articles are good, then your articles could also be chosen by other sites for inclusion and this is another advantage of writing articles. They have to use your “About the Author” section so you will get a free link back to your site. This is one successful way to get picked up by Google and if the articles deal with same subject as your business, then chances of increased traffic to your site are far more. Finally, direct Google submission is a possibility, but to get indexed fast, you can not bypass directory submission and article writing.
There will always be plenty of ways to work from home. But there will not likely be another company that I have found that gives you the option to buy customers for your business.
